Abstract

1352561 Bituminous paving mass SKEGA AB 21 April 1971 [21 April 1970] 10492/71 Heading C3N A method of producing a paving mass including stone material consisting of macadam and filling material, asphalt, a rubber vulcanizate distributed in particles differing in size comprises heating that part of the stone material consisting of macadam to a predetermined temperature below the pyrolysis temperature of the rubber vulcanizate, supplying particulate solid rubber vulcanizate to said heated macadam and mixing it with said heated macadam so that those parts of the rubber particles which come into contact with the macadam are heated sufficiently to adhere to the surfaces of the heated stone particles by partial thermal breakdown without losing their original form and character, and thereafter adding the filling material and the bituminous binding agent to the mixture of macadam and particulate rubber vulcanizate, said particulate rubber vulcanizate having a first fraction of smaller particles and a second fraction of larger particles, the second fraction having a largest particle dimension of substantially 8 mm., and being added to the mixture in a quantity smaller than that of the first fraction. The second fraction may be added first to the heated macadam and mixed therewith. Then the first fraction is added, after which the filling material and asphalt are added and mixed. The particles of the second fraction may have a maximum particle dimension of 1-8 mm., and the particles of the first fraction a maximum particle dimension less than 1 mm. Preferably a substantial proportion of the particles of the second fraction are in the form of threads. The first fraction may form 55% by weight of the total amount of added rubber vulcanizate.
