Abstract

135,245. Calthrop, E. R. Oct. 18, 1918. Parachutes. - In parachutes launched by the application of the load, means are provided whereby, as the parachute is launched, portions of its periphery are opened by rupturable or other connexions between the periphery and the parachute container, thereby admitting air to facilitate the full opening of the parachute. The parachute body 3 and tapes 4 are folded within a two-part container 1, 2, and the periphery of the parachute is connected at intervals by cords 11, having rupturable portions 12, to the suspending-loop 9 on the part 1, so that, as the load withdraws the parachute, the cords 11 open out gussets 13 until the portions 12 break. In the case where the main parachute is withdrawn by a pilot parachute, the cords 11 are connected to the pilot parachute, the rupturable portions 12 being omitted.
