Abstract

1351423 Making concrete reinforcement rods KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSCHE HOOGOVENS EN STAALFABRIEKEN NV 13 April 1972 [14 April 1971] 17156/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division C7] A method of making a profiled rod of a low carbon steel comprises hot rolling the rod to the required profile, cooling the rod by liquid in at least three stages, the stages being separated by periods during which the rod temperature equalizes through the cross-section of the rod, and coiling the rod at a temperature of 530- 700‹ C. A rod of steel, composed of 0À20% C, 0À40% Mn balance Fe and usual impurities is finish rolled at a temperature of 950‹ C. and has a profile consisting of two diametrically opposed longitudinal ribs with helical ribs inclined at 45 degrees to the rod axis and stopping short of the longitudinal ribs. The rod leaves the profiling rollers at 18 m./sec. and passes through four cooling zones, in which water is sprayed on to the rod. Each zone is one metre in length and they are spaced from each other by one metre. Prior to coiling, the rod passes through an air cooling zone of 14 m. length and it is then coiled while at a temperature of 625‹ C. The rods may be cut to length and subsequently welded together to form mats for reinforcing concrete.
