Abstract

1350797 Reciprocating pumps J A SAPORTA 16 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 43115/71 Heading F1A A magnetically-actuated pump comprises either a bucket piston of non-magnetizable material with a bucket value E, Fig. 1, of magnetizable material, or a solid piston D 1 , Fig.7, of magnetizable material, energization of the actuating solenoids J causing reciprocating movement of the valve E and subsequent movement of the piston D in Fig. 1, and reciprocation of the piston D 1 in Fig. 7. The solenoid housing K is of magnetizable material and may extend partly or completely through the wall of the cylinder A at the lower end, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). Cylinder A is of non-magnetizable material. The Fig.7 pump is double acting, and the intensity, duration and frequency of the electrical pulses supplied to solenoids J 1 , J 2 are controlled by controller 5a. Piston D 1 has a rod extending from its upper end for engaging a seat R upstream of valve O to provide positive cut-off. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the ball valve E of Fig. 1 is replaced by a lift valve having a stem guided in the piston. In Fig. 8 (not shown), a double-acting pump has a piston comprising two telescopically-engaging, cup-shaped portions (60), (61), the lower portion (60) being of magnetizable material and the upper portion of non-magnetizable material, so that at the end of the upward stroke, the lower portion telescopes into the upper portion to draw in an extra quantity of liquid beneath the piston assembly, and at the beginning of the downward stroke telescopes out of the upper portion to deliver the extra quantity. Another double-acting pump, Fig. 13 (not shown), comprises a bucket piston (88a) with a magnetizable valve and a solid magnetizable piston in connected coaxial cylinders. In Fig. 15 (not shown), two bucket pistons with magnetizable valves (103), (104) reciprocate in opposite directions in a common cylinder.
