Abstract
974,087. Reciprocating pumps. O. MUHLSCHLEGEL. Jan. 26, 1961 [Jan. 26, 1960], No. 3139/61. Heading F1A. [Also in Division H2] An electromagenetically-actuated free-piston pump comprises a cylinder surrounded by a magnetizing coil and having non-magnetizable sections 4, 4A, e.g. of synthetic resin, and magnetizable sections, e.g. of soft iron, externally connected by a magnetizable housing 1, and a magnetizable bucket piston 2 having a circumferential groove 9 such that the piston completes the magnetic flux path when in a predetermined position between its rest position and its working stroke end position, or at the end of its working stroke. The coil is A.C. energized to move piston 2 on its working stroke against a return spring 7 or a diaphragm. Spring 7 may be embedded in plastics material. A closed air chamber may be connected to the pump outlet for high frequency operation, the air volume being suchthat the chamber resonance frequency coincides with the pump frequency. The bucket piston 2 may have one valve, Fig. 1, or two valves, Fig. 2, or may be valve-less, Fig. 3. The sliding surfaces of the bucket may be tapered so that contact occurs only with the non-magnetizable cylinder sections. A buffer may be provided at the cylinder bottom. A switch 8 within coil housing 1 automatically cuts off the current when overheating occurs. A by-pass controlled by a pressure-sensitive valve may be provided between the pump outlet and inlet. Several pumps may be arranged in series or in parallel.
