Abstract

1484674 Reciprocating pumps BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 3 Dec 1974 [5 Dec 1973] 56351/73 Heading F1A An electromagnetically-actuated pump, e.g. for mounting in a vehicle fuel tank, comprises a housing 12 formed by two identical parts 13, 14, e.g. of sintered steel, held together by spring clamps 17, a piston 21 of ferromagnetic material reciprocated in a sleeve 20 of non-ferrous material by a field generated by alternately energizing solenoids 27, 28, and check-valves 31, 32, 33 in the inlet 18, outlet 19 and the piston passage 34. The valves may be of the duck bill type, as shown, or the flap type. Sealing is provided by washers 35. A control unit for switching power to the solenoids may be built into the pump or located remotely. The pump output may be varied by varying the switching rate. Cooling is effected by the fuel in which the pump is immersed.
