1350363 Model theatres I SMITH 18 Jan 1972 2386/72 Heading A6S.[Also in Divisions B6 and G5] A self-erecting shadow box comprises a cardboard open frame 20, glued to the rear of which may be a transparent sheet 32; a back drop 34, which comprises a cardboard sheet 36 having a central section 38, a pair of side panels 40 hinged to it along fold lines 42, a bottom panel 44 hinged to it alone a fold line 46. and a transverse flan 48 hinged to the bottom panel 44 along a fold line 50 and glued to the rear of the frame 20. A cardboard sheet 56 with a pair of feet 64 and a pair of closely spaced notches 66 is glued to the rear of sheet 36 to support the box in a vertical position. An elastic member 67 engaged in the notches 66 urges the box from its collapsed condition to its erected condition by pulling the two side panels 40 towards each other, thereby forcing the central section 38 rearward away from frame 20. In a modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the backdrop sheet (84) includes two parallel spaced bottom panels (90), (92) and a pair of transverse flaps (94), (96) glued to the central section (86) and the frame (80) forming a tubular parallelogram (98). An elastic band (102) engages notches (100) in the side panels (88). A flat figure (104), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be carried in a slot in a side panel. When collapsed the box may be kept in an envelope, and be in the form of a greetings card which erects itself as it is pulled from the envelope.
