Abstract

1349879 Fifth wheel couplings H VON GRUNBERG 6 Aug 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 37171/71 Heading B7T A fifth wheel coupling comprises a plate 1 mounted on a tractor and having an elongate slot 5 therein, and a king pin 6 mounted on a semi-trailer and having an electric/air line connector 7 rotatable thereon, the connector being shaped at 9 for accurate location in slot 5 which is correspondingly shaped at 10, and there being mounted on the plate 1 locking means consisting of a latch 11 which is urged by springs 17 and 18 such that face 23 thereof engages face 22 at the rear end of connector 7, the connector when in position in slot 5 engaging with air and electric contacts mounted on the plate 1. To release the latch pressurized air is let into cylinder 13 thus compressing the springs and withdrawing the latch until nose 14 thereof engages with element 20 on guideway 21. The king pin and connector 7 may then be withdrawn from the slot 5. When connector re-enters slot 5 it trips the latch out of engagement with element 20.
