Abstract

1349735 Electro-depositing metal FULMER RESEARCH INSTITUTE Ltd 19 April 1971 [20 Nov 1969] 56952/69 Heading C7B A substrate, e.g. a mild or high strength alloy steel rod, is provided with a protective coating of electro-deposited metal, e.g. Cd or Zn, having dispersed therein hydrogen-absorbent metallic particles, e.g. of Ni, Co, Cu, Ta, Pt group metal, or alloy thereof, such as of Ni-Fe, Ni-Mn, Ni-Cr, Cr-Mn, Co-Mn, Co-Fe or Co- Cr, preferably of size less than 5 microns, by electro-depositing from a solution containing the metal(e.g. as Cd (CN) 2 ) and the particles, preferably confined in a separate catholyte compartment by a cylindrical semi-permeable or porous membrane. The particles may be circulated as a slurry in the solution, preferably intermittently, by a propeller at the end of a rotating cathode rod. The plated substrate may be heat-treated at 200‹C and immersed in ammonium nitrate solution.
