Abstract

1349605 Sheet extrusion die EGAN MACHINERY CO 21 Jan 1972 [21 Jan 1971 17 June 1971] 2993/72 Heading B5A A flat sheet or film die is provided at each width extremity of its extrusion orifice 31, Fig. 6, with deckle means 41 and 38 respectively at the inlet to, and externally of the outlet of the orifice 31, the deckle means being simultaneously or independently adjustable across the width of the orifice, and the means 41 in use having its end 43 adjusted inwardly of the end of the means 38 by a distance "X", Fig. 1, of 0À25 to 2À0 inches, to avoid the formation of beaded edges on the extruded sheet or film arising from contraction upon issuing from the orifice 31. Each deckle means 38 is carried for adjustment by a member 35 which is slidable along surfaces 17, 18 of the die lips 13, 14, by means of a pinion 28 engaging rack teeth 37 of the member 35, and which is clamped in position, together with the means 38, by screws 40. Each deckle means 41 comprises a rod having a portion 44 outside the die, at right angles to a portion 42 within the die which tapers towards the end 43 and which is provided with four symmetrically distributed grooves 46 and 47 each having relatively inclined sides meeting at an apex to define the base of the groove, each groove increasing in depth towards the end 43 of the rod where the base of each groove is co-incident with the rod axis. The means 41 is slidable and rotatable through a die guide sleeve 50, having an external thread for engagement with an internally threaded sleeve 51, and with a sealing ring 52 for the means 41 being located between the sleeves 50, 51. For adjustment of means 41 independantly of, or simultaneously with the means 38, a plate 53 is bolted to the member 35 and carries a threadedly engaging tapered bolt 57, through a bore of which the means 41 is rotatable and slidable, and within which it is clamped upon contraction of the bore, permitted by diametrically extending slots at the narrower end of the bolt 57 and is effected when the bolt 57 is threadedly tightened into the plate 53. One of the die lips 14 is adjustable to vary the depth of the orifice 31, at a bolt connection 23. The die may be heated by electric means (not shown).
