Abstract

1428058 Mixing screws SOFISA 19 June 1974 [22 June 1973] 27075/74 Heading B1C [Also in Division B4-5] An extrusion press comprises an upstream portion in which the screw has a single, or two start, thread 2 and the internal surface of the cylinder 4 has grooves 5 whereby extrudable material is delivered in proportion to the speed of rotation of the screw, and independently of extrusion head pressure. In the downstream portion, the screw has a pair of co-extensive threads 6, 7, definining a pair of screw channels 8, 9 of throughflow cross-sections which respectively decrease to zero, and increase to a maximum in the downstream direction. The thread 7 bounding the downstream side of the channel of increasing cross-section is of a smaller diameter than that bounding the upstream side, so that the less viscous material is progressively transferred over the thread 7 from the channel 8 of decreasing section to the channel 9 of increasing section. The cylinder grooves 9 may extend longitudinally, or may comprise a single or multiple helical grooves of opposite hand to the screw thread 2.
