Abstract

1373090 Rolling screw threads R BUCKLEY 20 March 1973 [9 April 1972] 47092/71 Heading B3M [Also in Division F2] Flat or cylindrical dies are used to roll the middle convolutions 22 of threads of a bolt so that their crests are displaced towards the head of the bolt or alternatively the roots of these threads are displaced away from the head. The pitch interval of the crests P1, P2 and roots P of the upper, lower and middle convolutions is constant except at the intervals P3, P4 between the upper and middle convolutions and the middle and lower convolutions. The effect is such that when engaged with a nut having a standard thread, interaction between the two tends to lock them together. The flat or cylindrical dies have profiles corresponding to the shape of the thread convolutions and in the case of flat dies 30, 32 the teeth 36, 38 for forming the convolutions are of constant cross-section along their length. Alternatively an insert 42 for rolling the middle convolutions 22 may be included in the dies 40.
