Abstract
1349147 Hydraulic couplings; reverse gearing FLUIDRIVE ENG CO Ltd 12 May 1971 [13 May 1970] 23240/70 Headings F2C F2D and F2U In a double hydrodynamic coupling for a marine reverse gear wherein integral turbine elements 3, 4 are arranged between pump elements 1, 2 interconnected by a two-part casing 7, 8, a gear 17 is connected to the casing at its central region only to define air spaces 21, 22 between the axially outer ends of the gear and the casing elements 7, 8. The air spaces 21, 22 retard the conduction of heat from the fluid coupling to the gear. The reverse gear, Fig. 4, comprises an input pinion 34A geared to two forward and reverse pinions 35A, 36A, 37A freely rotatable on countershaft 38A, 41A, 48A respectively carrying pinions 40A, 42A, 49A meshing an output pinion 31. The first forward pinion 36A is selectively connected to its countershaft 41A by a fluid coupling of the above type and a synchronous self-shifting clutch 43A. When the slip in the forward coupling is minimal a dog clutch 39A may be engaged to connect the second forward pinion 35A to its countershaft 38A. The reverse pinion 37A is selectively connected to its countershaft 48A by a fluid coupling of the above type. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) two input shafts (51, 52) are geared to the gears of four forward (55), (56), (57), (58) and reverse (65) fluid couplings of the above type which are selectively filled to provide forward and reverse ratios.
