Abstract

1349056 Knitting sleeved garments COURTAULDS Ltd 4 May 1971 [5 May 1970] 21481/ 70 Headings D1C and D1K In a method of knitting a sleeved garment, a sleeve extension portion 31 is knitted with portions of the wales at an angle to one another by taking needles out of action and subsequently re-introducing them. Withdrawal may be simultaneous and re-introduction sequential, or vice versa; both may be sequential. Needles knitting edge wales 24, 25 may be continuously in action. The procedure may be repeated several times. The garment may be knitted on a flat V-bed machine with pairs of additional beds for knitting the sleeves. The loops at the end of the extensions are joined to the top of the body 33 by doubling and knitting, while knitting of the body proceeds. Alternatively the portions may be joined on the machine, after completion, by linking needles 67. Shanks of the needles 66 are provided with a slot 68 to accommodate the needle 67. Sleeve extension loops are doubled to a body loop by transfer to the opposite additional bed, and then back to the opposite main bed. The method may also be performed on a V-bed machine having a single additional pair of beds. Knitting is commenced with a body and sleeve tube. The sleeve wales continue from one sleeve extension across the top of the body and into the other extension and sleeve. If the garment is knit on a machine of two beds only the sleeves and extensions are knit spaced apart, and the body subsequently knit integrally between them (Figs. 4a-d, not shown).
