1348786 Measuring the length of moving vehicles; road traffic signalling apparatus PLESSEY CO Ltd 14 May 1971 [5 June 1970] 27406/70 Headings G4H and G4Q Apparatus for measuring the length of a moving vehicle comprises a first counter 14 the output of which is related to the speed of the vehicle, a second counter 12 the output of which is related to the length and speed of the vehicle and a circuit 28 responsive to the two outputs for determining the length of the vehicle. A pair of inductive loops A, B are arranged in the path of the vehicle so that when a vehicle enters the loop A, a detector 8 enables the second counter 12 to start counting clock pulses from a generator 16. When the vehicle leaves the loop A, the detector 8 stops the counter which therefore has a count proportional to the sum of the vehicle length and the length L 1 of the loop A divided by the vehicle velocity. When the vehicle enters the loop A, the first counter 14 also starts to count and is stopped by the combined outputs of the detector 8 and a detector 10 when the detector 10 senses the entry of the vehicle into the loop B. Hence the count in the counter 14 is proportional to the known distance L 1 + L3 divided by the vehicle velocity and a line 36 may provide a digital speed indication. From a knowledge of the frequencies of the clock pulses fed to the two counters, the length of the vehicle is calculated and compared with a stored critical length to provide an output on a line 32 or 34 depending on whether the measured length is above or below the critical length.
