1278527 Measuring traffic characteristics L'ECLAIRAGE DES VEHICULES SUR RAIL 24 Feb 1970 [5 March 1969] 8916/70 Headings G4H and G4Q Apparatus for measuring the speed and separation of objects, e.g. automobiles comprises two detectors 11, 12, which may be inductive loops, a fixed distance apart. Detector 11, switches on an AND gate 18 by means of bi-stable flip-flop 15, starts counter 19 recording clock pulses from pulse generator 13. Detector 12 switches off AND gate 18 and stops the count. The total count is proportional to the vehicle speed, and is recorded by readout unit 29. Counters 21 and 22 are switched between alternate counting states (i.e. 21 counting, 22 off and vice-versa) by successive operations of detector 11 controlling AND gates 17, 16 via flip-flop 14, to control clock pulses from pulse generator 13. The total count is this time proportional to the distance separating consecutive vehicles, and is recorded by readout unit 29.
