Abstract
1348564 Dry shavers BRAUN AG 10 Sept 1971 [11 Sept 1970] 42420/71 Heading B4B [Also in Division H2] A dry shaver is driven by a motor comprising a plurality of bilaminar bending oscillators of ferro-electric ceramic material mechanically connected in parallel and coacting to form at least one oscillating body connected to a driven member. Fig. 3 shows a dry shaver in which the oscillators are mounted face to face on a fixed rail, their free ends being attached to a linearly reciprocatable rail 4<SP>1</SP> which drives the cutter block 24 through a pin 25. Each oscillator comprises a metal strip 1 sandwiched between a pair of ferro-electric ceramic strips 2 faced with metal electrodes 3 and the oscillators are attached to the rail 4 either by securing them in recesses by casting resin or casting them in the rail at the same time as it is moulded. In the shaver shown in Fig. 4, the oscillators are mounted side by side in the rail 4 and actuate a rotary oscillatory cutter block 44 by engaging at their free ends in a groove 443 in the block. The cutter block may be formed in a number of parts each driven by a group of oscillators, Fig. 7 (not shown). Alternatively, Fig. 5, a single rotary cutter block 44 may be actuated by a plurality of oscillators which are fixed at both ends in a frame 471, their centres where the anti-nodes occur being connected together by a comb-shaped web 48 having a projection 481 for driving the cutter block. Fig. 8(a) shows a further embodiment wherein a pair of cutting heads 74 1 , 74 2 are linearly reciprocated in opposite directions by hinged or resilient bars 71 1 , 71 2 which are moved towards and away from each other by rails 4 1 , 4 2 between which bending oscillators 76 are mounted. The oscillators may all bend in the same direction or groups thereof may bend in opposite directions to reduce out-of-balance forces. One of the cutting heads in this arrangement may be replaced by the outer cutting foil and the arrangement may be adapted to actuate a single cutting head by omitting one of the bars 71 1 or 71 2 and fixing the adjacent rail 4 1 or 4 2 to the housing 7, Fig. 8(d) (not shown). The shaver shown in Fig. 3 may have two cutter blocks each operated by a group of oscillators, the two groups being mounted on the rail 4, Fig. 6 (not shown). Alternatively the two groups may actuate a single cutter block, one group oscillating in opposition to the other group and being connected thereto by a two armed lever, Fig. 9 (not shown).
