1337658 Dry shavers GILLETTE CO 30 June 1972 [27 July 1971] 35176/71 Heading B4B A dry shaver comprises a cutter 1 guided for reciprocating movement along a substantially linear path by means of at least two resilient members 6, each member comprising a stem 11 and at least two legs 4, 5, 7, the free end of at least one leg being secured to the cutter, and the free end of at least one other leg being secured to a fixed part 8 of the shaver, and the free end of the stem being restrained against vibration in the direction parallel to the path of reciprocation of the cutter. The cutter 1 is in the form of a multi-bladed elongated member adapted to co-operate with a curved perforated foil, the cutter being mounted on a bridge member 3 via a spring connection or rubber block 2; the bridge member is connected at each end to a resilient member 6 only one of which is shown in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 2, the bridge is formed with lugs connected to the free ends of the legs 4, 5, the middle leg 7 being connected at its free end to a frame part 8 of the shaver. The free end of the stem 11 is connected by rubber blocks 12 secured to plates 13 which are mounted on a frame part 14 of the shaver. The bridge 3 is reciprocated by means of an electric motor 19 via a cam 23. A second bridge 3a is also provided and is driven by the motor via a cam 23a so as to be out of phase with the bridge 3. The bridge 3a is provided with weights 9 and connected to resilient members 6a in a similar manner to that described for the members 6. The resilient members 6, 6a may be of metal plate or wire or of plastics material and they could be formed integrally with the bridges 3, 3a. The cutter and its mounting may be reciprocated at or near their natural frequency and the motor may be mains or battery energized, the speed of the motor being maintained substantially constant by suitable control circuitry described. In modifications the counter-balance weights may be dispensed with and the cutter formed in two parts, the parts being driven in antiphase and the rotary motor may be replaced by a vibratory motor system.
