Abstract

1348370 Injection moulding containers AIRFIX INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 April 1971 [13 May 1970 7 July 1970 29 Dec 1970 12 Jan 1971 3 Feb 1971 (3) 24 March 1971 30 March 1971] 23273/70 32863/70 61666/70 1460/71 3816/71 3817/71 3818/71 7749/71 and 8169/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] In a method of making a container which tapers towards its base a flexible sheet 2 which comprises the side wall is located in a mould cavity provided between male and female mould members and of a shape corresponding to that of the required container; the opposed juxtaposed edges of the sheet are joined by the injection moulding of a rib 3 thereto which extends longitudinally. A base 4 and a lip 7 may be simultaneously injection moulded; alternatively the base may comprise a flexible sheet located in the mould cavity and joined circumferentially to the side wall by injection moulding. Additional longitudinally extending and circumferentially spaced moulded ribs 3<SP>1</SP> may be provided with projections 4<SP>1</SP> for stacking purposes. A handle may be provided integral with the ribs or a spout integral with the lip 7. The container may have longitudinal flutes obtained by appropriately shaped mould wall surfaces, and at least one circumferential rib may be located intermediate the container ends. The seamed rib which joins the juxtaposed side wall sheet edges may comprise parts 25a, 25b, Fig. 9, with a further branch 26 extending therefrom providing a moulding integral with a moulding 28 connecting a base 27 with the side wall and a lip 29; material is injected into the mould cavity at a central point of the end closure. Two or more similarly shaped ribs may be provided. The longitudinally extending ribs may be located at the corners of containers having polygonal cross-sections; such corners may be curved and each rib may have thinner lateral extensions extending around the corner. The flexible sheet 2 may be sub-divided by weakening lines into panels which readily take the shape of the mould cavity, and base sections may extend from the panels.
