Abstract
1348331 Pouring molten metal ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Jan 1972 [22 Jan 1971] 2955/71 Heading F4B A stream of molten metal is discharged from a container having an outlet orifice of diameter less than ¢ inch, the molten metal being heated by induction heating immediately upstream of the orifice. A vessel 1, which may be heated by an induction coil or other method, has a sump 5 with a pouring nozzle 6 having an outlet 7 of diameter less than ¢ inch. A coil 8 surrounds the sump 5, so that it may be heated to enable the metal to be poured. The stirring effect of the coil 8 supplied with alternating current prevents the metal freezing in the outlet. The frequency and power supplied to the coil is adjusted to prevent undue turbulence in the vessel. The current may be periodically interrupted to allow the delivery of a given amount of metal if the orifice is small enough, or a lump of solid metal may be placed above the nozzle to allow the vessel to be filled. The pressure within the vessel may be controlled to regulate the rate of pouring.
