Abstract
967,657. Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. CONCAST A.G. Dec. 7, 1962 [Dec. 8, 1961], No. 46222/62. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F4] The rate of flow of molten metal from the pouring nozzle 2 of a tundish 1 feeding a continuous casting machine is controlled by a current supplied through wires 5 in opposite end walls, and a magnetic field induced by poles 9a and 9b of an electromagnet disposed respectively in walls 7 and 8 projecting laterally of the tundish and defining a constriction in a vertical plane including the nozzle. The wires 5 which may be of the same metal as that being poured are connected to terminal bars 3 and 4 and project inwardly from the walls into the melt. In a modification, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), the constricting walls extend across the tundish in the form of a bridge having an arch above the nozzle. Another modification, Figs. 9-11 (not shown), has two nozzles each associated with a constricting wall. U.S.A. Specification 2,187,720 is referred to.
