Abstract
1347806 Preparation of polyphenylene oxides MITSUBISHI GAS CHEMICAL CO Inc 14 April 1972 [14 April 1971 (2)] 17467/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Polyphenylene oxides are prepared by oxidizing a substituted phenol with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst which includes a copper compound, e.g. cuprous cyanide, thiocyanate, iodide, sulphide, cupric sulphide, sulphate, nitrate and chloride, an iodine compound, e.g. an alkali metal iodide, ethyl iodide or iodine itself the copper compound and the iodine compound being optionally the same compound and a tertiary diamine which is capable of forming a stable chelate ring with the copper compound. Examples describe the preparation of poly (2,6-dimethyl- 1,4-phenylene) ether and poly(2-methyl-6-ethyl- 1,4-phenylene) ether.
