Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled high-quality polymer with a small amount of a catalyst, by subjecting a phenolic compound to oxidation polymerization with oxygen by using the catalyst consisting of a copper compound, N- phenylethanolamine, a secondary aliphatic amine, a specific diamine and a tertiary amine. CONSTITUTION:A phenolic compound is subjected to oxidation polymerization with oxygen by using a catalyst consisting of (A) a copper compound (cupric chloride or cuprous nitrate), (B) N-phenylethanolamine, (C) a secondary aliphatic amine (e.g. dimethylamine), (D) a 1,2-diamine shown by formula R1-HN-R-NHR2 (R1 and R2 are isopropyl, 4-6C tertiary alkyl or cycloalkyl containing no H an alpha-carbon atom) or a 1,3-diamine (e.g. N,N'-t-butylethylenediamine) and (E) a tertiary amine (preferably N,N,N',N'-diaminopropane).
