Abstract

1347407 Vinylchloride-conjugated diene copolymers BRIDGESTONE TIRE CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [10 March 1970 7 Oct 1970] 23371/71 Heading C3P A conjugated diene is copolymerized with vinyl chloride to form a random copolymer containing 5 to 45 mol per cent of the vinylchloride by reaction in a halohydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a Freidel-Crafts Group II to VIII metal halide, and/or an alkyl aluminium di- or sesqui-halide. Infra-red and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra are provided as evidence of the copolymer structure. In examples, vinyl chloride is copolymerized with butadiene or isoprene, in CH 2 Cl 2 , CCl 4 , CHCl 3 or Cl.CH 2 CH 2 . - Cl, and in the presence of C 2 H 5 AlCl 2 , AlBr 3 , AlCl 3 , Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 -AlCl 3 , Al 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl 3 , TiCl 4 , SnCl 4 , BF 3 .O(C 2 H 5 ) 2 , FeCl 3 , VCl 4 , GaCl 3 , WCl 6 , Al(C 2 H 5 )Cl 2 -TiCl 4 , VOCl 3 or GaCl 3 , or (n-C 4 H 9 )- AlCl 2 .
