Abstract

134,709. Brown, G. W. A., and Arrol- Johnston, Ltd. Jan. 24, 1919. Channels and reservoirs in shaft couplings.- The working parts of a ball-and-socket joint are all enclosed to exclude dust and retain lubricant. Fig. 1 shows the application to a joint of a motorcar steering-gear. The ball member A is carried by a link or lever B and engages a socket portion C passing through an eye D attached to a link E or the like. The other socket portion F screws into the portion C or slides therein, and is pressed into engagement with the ball by a spring abutting against a cap G. This cap screws on the socket portion C and serves to clamp it in the eye D. A grooved washer J surrounds the neck of the ball. The cap G serves as an oil container, the oil preferably being supplied through a passage C communicating with the line E to which oil is supplied through a hole closed by a plug E<2>.
