Abstract

460,254. Universal joints. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. July 25, 1935, No. 21212. Convention date, March 22. [Class 65 (ii)] In a ball joint, particularly for vehicle shock-absorber links, having between the ball 12 and socket 16 an insert 18 of rubber or like deformable material under relatively high compression pressure, the opening in the insert 18 through which the ball stem 14 extends is elongated, being of width equal to the thickness of the stem 14 but of greater length to allow limited swinging in one plane. The insert is preferably formed, as shown, with a collar surrounding the opening and fitting in a corresponding opening in the socket. In the form shown, the socket is formed with a large opening at the side opposite to the ball stem to permit assembly of the joint, and this opening is closed by a partspherical cap 20 which is secured by crimping or spinning over the edge of the socket opening. In a modification, the socket has only one opening and the ball stem passes through an aperture in the closing cap.
