1346593 Vehicle suspension systems DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 30 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 20781/70 Heading B7D A vehicle suspension comprises an inner arm 3 pivotally mounted on the body 1 of a crosscountry vehicle and pivotally connected to an outer arm 7 depending therefrom, both the arms 3, 7 being pivoted to move in vertical planes parallel to the longitudinal centre line of the vehicle, means for causing controlled pivoting of the outer arm 7 on the inner arm 3 as the inner arm 3 pivots on the body 1, a stub axle 13 rotatably attached to the outer arm 7 and having a hub 36 and wheel 15 rotatably mounted thereon, and a port 16 extending upwardly from the stub axle 13 with its upper end pivotally attached to a locating arm 17 pivotally mounted on the body 1. The inner arm 3 is pivoted on a rigid tube 2 on the body 1 and carries a rotatable spindle 4 to which the outer arm 7 is secured. Sprockets 5a, 5b fixed to the tube 2 and spindle 4 respectively are connected by a chain 6 and may have a tooth ratio such that the free end 7a of the outer arm 7 moves in a straight line as the inner arm pivots on the body 1. A suspension unit 18 acting on the locating arm 17 may include oleo-pneumatic means for controlling the height of the body 1 above the ground. The wheel 15 may be driven through a drive shaft 21, sprockets 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d and chains 23a, 23b and a shaft 24 extending through the stub axle 13. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the stub axle is jointed and the post connected to the locating arm by a ball joint so that the wheel can be steered by linkage connected to an arm on the post. The chains 6, 23a, 23b may be replaced by toothed belts or gear-wheel drives, or the chain 6 may be replaced by a lever system.
