Abstract
1346076 Continuous casting CONCAST AG 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 22991/71 Heading B3F At least one cooled side wall 3<SP>1</SP> and one cooled end wall 4 of a plate mould are adjustable and the end walls 4 (which are clamped by the side walls 3, 3<SP>1</SP>) are suspended from yokes 10 which rest on a supporting frame 2 of the mould. Cooling water is supplied to passages 7 in the mould walls and connections 22 convey water to and from the yokes 10 for the end walls 4. To increase the length of the cross-section the mould cavity 6, the side wall 3<SP>1</SP> is moved outwardly by cylinders 5 and the released walls 4 are moved apart by screw spindles or racks, or shifting devices attached to the tops of the yokes and to the frame 2, or, as shown, by a cylinder 12 pushing apart levers (14) pivoted on the side walls 3, 3<SP>1</SP> and having forked ends (21) each embracing a necked end of a yoke 10. The yokes 10 have end blocks 10a slidable on ways 11 having T-slots 15 in which bolts 51 can slide or be tightened to hold the yokes in position. A wall 4 comprises a copper plate 31, Fig. 3, on a backing plate 32 with a T-slot 33 in which a block 34 grips the plate 32 until the spring- loading of bolts 40 attached to the block is overcome by the pressure of conical cam portions 43 of a screw spindle 42 axially movable in a wall holder 30. The latter is pivoted at 46 to the yoke 10 so that the inclination of the wall 4 can be adjusted. Springs 48 urge the holder 30 and its wall 4 towards the casting. An internal gauge is used when adjusting the size and taper of the mould cavity 6. The springs 48 co-operate with the gauge for taper determination until the end walls 4 are clamped. The screw spindle 42 also permits a movable backing wedge 50 to be interposed between holder 30 and a bearer 47 secured to the yoke 10. The wedge 50 may be replaced by eccentric discs in the frame 2. Instead of the screw spindle arrangement, a simple member (70) may be suspended by hook on the mould frame 2, behind a wall 4 to determine the latter's position and inclination. In addition to the thrust of the cylinders 5 on the side wall 3<SP>1</SP>, additional thrust to grip an end wall 4 may be supplied by hydraulic rams connected between the yokes 10 and the side wall. Alternatively, a beam (60) is hung from each yoke adjacent the outer face of the side wall to align with one edge of the respective wall 4 at the opposite face to apply thrust to the side wall, possibly by way of spacer (60<SP>1</SP>). The thrust is transmitted to the beam by a bridge piece (61), corresponding to the adjustment range (59) of the end wall, and carried by the rods (64) of rams (62) mounted on the frame 2. The thrust is developed by stacks of springs (63) acting between the frame 2 and the rod heads. The moulds are said to permit closer spacing in multiple strand casting machines.
