Abstract

1345832 Reactors HOCHTEMPERATURREAKTORBAU GmbH and KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 12 May 1972 [14 May 1971] 22497/72 Heading G6C In operation of a pebble-bed reactor, gas coolant is conveyed through the core from top to bottom and fuel elements are conveyed through the core from top to bottom in such manner that the axial power density is a maximum in the upper part of the reactor and declines approximately exponentially in the downward direction. The fuel reaches its terminal burn-up during a single passage through the core. Regulation is effected by control rods in a top reflector and by shut-off rods which can penetrate into the upper part of the core. The core may comprise concentric radial zones of different fuel concentrations. It is stated that the mode of operation described enables gas outlet temperatures up to about 1000‹ C. to be attained.
