Abstract

1345798 Bag filling machines MAYER KG 19 April 1971 [13 April 1970 26 March 1971] 26860/71 Heading B8C During filling, plastics bags are distended by pairs of arms 19, Fig. 1, each pair being separated to grip a bag, and subsequently brought together to release the filled bag, by the cooperation of a fixed rail 8 and a roller 11 which moves with the arms. The roller 11 is secured to a vertically slidable T-piece 9 which is connected to the arms 19 by pivoted links and which is biased by springs 12, Fig. 2, towards the position in which the arms are separated. The arms 19 carry fingers 20 to engage the bags and also carry strips 21 which extend above the bags so that the latter may be overfilled to allow for subsequent compression. The arms 19 and their operating links are mounted on a polygonal drum 5 which rotates with a turntable 2. Empty bags are placed on the arms 19 by an operator and the filled bags are either removed by the operator or fall on to a discharge conveyer 1. The distended bags are filled from a source 3 and, when they are to be used as flower pots, a drill may be formed by a device 4. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the arms 19, instead of carrying the fingers 20 and strips 21, each carry a curved plate (120) whose shape conforms to that of the filled bag. In another embodiment, Fig. 10, the bag filling apparatus forms a separate unit which overlaps, rather than rotates with, the turntable 2 of a potting or repotting machine. The turntable 2 carries containers 28 into which the bags fall after being pushed off the filling machine by a ram 26. The ram 26 acts through the same holes 23 that are used to fill the bags. As the apparatus rotates, each hole 23 passes beneath a fixed baffle 25 where it receives a pile of material that has accumulated from the source 3. The bags may be filled with potting compost, peat, fertilizer, plant seeds, grain, flour, cement, or dyestuffs. (For Figures see next page.)
