Abstract

1345277 Isomerized halogenated biphenyl MONSANTO CO 12 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 37889/71 Heading C2C A process for the production of an isomerized halogenated biphenyl comprises (A) contacting an unisomerized mixture of halogenated biphenyls having from 1 to 5 halogen atoms per biphenyl molecule and an average halogen content of from 20 to 60% by weight, with a metal halide isomerization catalyst at a temperature of from 50‹ to 250‹ C. for a period of at least 15 minutes, and (B) recovering with essentially no fractionation a mixture of isomerized halogenated biphenyls having substantially the same average halogen content and relative proportions of mono-, di-, tri-, tetra- and pentahalogenated biphenyls as the unisomerized halogenated biphenyl mixture. In a modification of the process, the product obtained by contacting the unisomerized mixture of chlorinated biphenyls with the metal halide is further chlorinated. Catalysts specified include aluminium chloride optionally in the presence of anhydrous hydrogen chloride. Aluminium bromide and gallium trichloride are also specified. Examples are furnished. The products may be employed as hydraulic fluids or dielectric materials.
