Abstract

1345234 Spray nozzles BALTIMORE AIRCOIL CO Inc 28 June 1971 [19 May 1971] 30272/71 Heading B2F [Also in Division F4[ In an evaporative heat exchanger, a plurality of nozzles 23 are provided to spray water to be cooled into a venturi of circular crosssection, the nozzles 23, each of which is so constructed and orientated as to produce a fan shaped spray, being circumferentially spaced around an annular manifold 35 located adjacent the venturi inlet 32. The water sprays serve to entrain a flow of cooling air through the venturi. Cooled water is collected in a sump downstream of the venturi; the air leaves the heat exchanger through mist eliminators which remove entrained water droplets therefrom. In an alternative embodiment (see Figs. 4 and 5) a tree-type manifold system comprising a central manifold (39) from which spaced pipes (40) of different lengths extend in opposite directions is used in place of the annular manifold. The sprays may either be normal to the longitudinal axes of the pipes (see Fig. 4) or they may be inclined with respect to these axes (see Fig. 5), the orientation being different in different quadrants of the venturi throat. In a further embodiment (see Figs. 6 and 7) a single nozzle (41) having circumferentially spaced holes (42) each capable of producing a fan-shaped spray is employed.
