Abstract

1345019 Coiling wire MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO 7 July 1971 [9 July 1970] 31837/71 Heading B3C [Also in Division D1] A coil forming and transfer apparatus comprises an enclosure B into which product rings are delivered to accumulate therein into a cylindrical coil, a plate 58 in the enclosure for supporting the coil being formed; a mandrel 36 protruding upwardly through the plate into the enclosure, a side opening in the enclosure, and operating means for axially and pivotally manipulating the mandrel to transfer a fully formed coil through the side opening on to a coil transport device 30. In operation non-concentric rings 24 fall from a conveyer 26 around the mandrel on to a base comprising a platform 60 and the plate 58, Fig. 3, the platform and plate being lowered as the coil builds up. When the coil is fully formed retainers are moved into position to prevent further rings from falling around the mandrel. The platform 60 is lowered to below the upper end of casing 32 so that the plate 58 rests on stops 138. The mandrel is then lowered to a point where it will clear the retainers 136 where it is pivoted about the pivot P by a piston and cylinder 120. The pivot P is offset from the mandrel axis so that, when pivoting occurs, the plate 58 will be lifted off the platform 60 thereby preventing sliding of the coil on the platform. The mandrel 36 and plate 58 are pivoted into a slot 31 of the device 30 and then lowered into casing 32 so as to deposit the coil on base 30b of the device 30. The casing, mandrel and plate are then pivoted back to a vertical position and the cycle repeated. The mandrel can be vibrated, so as to compact the rings, by shaking the casing 32.
