In a machine for grouping and stacking bars, e.g. rolled steel sections, groups of bars are lifted off a conveyer and transferred to pivoted magnetic grippers 16, Fig. 2, which then deposit them on to a stacking conveyer 8, table or truck, inverting alternate groups. In one embodiment, Figs. 1, 2 (former not shown), bars 1 are delivered from a straightening machine (2) on to vertically movable rollers 4. When a bar has fully emerged from the straightening machine these rollers 4 are retracted below the plane of driven rollers (6), set at an angle to the rollers 4, which cause the rod 1 to move sideways against a stop ledge (not shown). When a sufficient number 1a have been grouped on the rolls 6, vertically reciprocating arms 11 are raised from below to above the plane of the rollers 6 to lift the layer la from the roller track. The arms 11, carried by members 10 movable along guide rails 12, are then moved to a position above a stationary stacking roller track 8. In this position, for the first layer of a stack the arms 11 are lowered below the level of the conveyer 8, to deposit the layer on the conveyer. Subsequently they are moved towards the bottom or the top of rotatable magnets 16, pivoted at 17 on vertically reciprocating arms 15. In the former case, as the arms 11 move away from the conveyer 8. the magnets 16 are lowered to deposit the layer on the stack. In the latter case before the layer is deposited on the stack, the magnets are rotated in a vertical plane through 180 degrees, so that this layer is inverted with respect to the immediately previous layer. When a sufficiently large stack has been formed, the conveyer is started to remove the completed stack 1b In place of the conveyer 8, a stacking table or truck may be used, in which case the arms 15 are fixed and the plane of the truck or table is raised or lowered.
