Abstract
1344996 Centrifugal strainer THOMAS BROADBENT & SONS Ltd 23 Nov 1971 [2 Dec 1970] 57336/70 Heading B1D [Also in Division F4] Laundry in a washer-extractor or caked material in an industrial centrifuge is loosened from the wall of the drum or basket 10 by means of lifters 24 which are displaceable to a position projecting inwardly of the drum, and which may be inflatable (Figs. 1 and 2), or comprise a lifter plate 31 (Fig. 7) displaceable by an inflatable tube 34. The lifters 24 may be of rounded saw-tooth or cycloidal cross-section or be in the form of a toroid. The lifters may be arranged helically or obliquely on the drum or basket 10, and may extend partially or fully along the drum or basket 10, or be interrupted. The lifters may be inflated together or separately from a valve-controlled source 22 of compressed air, and may comprise a separate inner tube within a laminated rubber or plastics or textile casing. In the washer-extractor of Fig. 1, the drum 10 has a false end 16 having inlet apertures 17 to the lifters 24 which are inflated during washing and rinsing, and after each machine cycle, and are deflated during spinning to prevent damage to laundry. The drum 10 is rotated slowly to assist removal of laundry. The inflatable lifters 24 may be located over metal lifters in the drum.
