Abstract

1344471 Reducing sulphur content of effluent gases RALPH M PARSONS CO 12 Jan 1971 [12 Jan 1970] 1381/71 Heading C1A A continuous process for reducing the sulphur content of an effluent gas stream comprises (a) enriching the effluent with a source of hydrogen to a level at least equal to the stoichiometric amount required to convert SO 2 and free sulphur in the effluent gas stream to H 2 S, (b) catalytically hydrogenating the enriched gas stream at 300‹ to 1200‹ F. to convert the SO 2 and free sulphur to H 2 S, (c) removing at least some of the water present in the hydrogenated gas stream and (d) then recovering the H 2 S by subjecting the hydrogenated gas stream to gas phase oxidation to convert the H 2 S to free sulphur. If the gas stream contains COS or CS 2 these are hydrolysed to H 2 S with water present in the stream during step (b). The hydrogenation may be effected using a supported or unsupported rare earth metal or a metal of Groups Va, VIa or VIII of the Mendeleef Periodic Table. The gas stream may be enriched with molecular hydrogen or with a donor material, e.g. CO which reacts with water to yield hydrogen. Step (c) may comprise condensing water from the gaseous stream below 120‹ F. then contacting the stream with a desiccant, e.g. silica gel or a glycol. Divisional Specification 1,344,472 is referred to.
