Abstract
1343946 Recirculating exhaust gas in I. C. engines REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 3 June 1971 [12 June 1970 26 Nov 1970] 18896/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] Exhaust gases are selectively recirculated through a control valve 5, Fig.1 between a muffler 4 and an induction manifold 2 as a function of specific engine operating conditions, the recirculation taking place during the engine cranking period before ignition after which it is stopped, during low engine speeds when the induction vacuum is above a pre-adjusted value and is stopped when the vacuum drops below the value and when the engine operates under full load conditions. When starter motor switch 31 is closed the energization of coil 29 moves rod 20 to compress spring 26 and unseat needle valve 9 to inter-connect pipes 6 and 7. The opening of switch 31 when ignition occurs results in the seating of valve 9. The valve is opened again when the inlet vacuum communicated via pipe 23 to casing 22 exceeds a predetermined value, the latter being adjusted as a function of the compression of spring 26. When the accelerator pedal is fully depressed switch 32, together with a switch controlling valve 34 is closed to start recirculation. In a modification a recirculation valve is controlled by manifold depression alone, the electromagnetic control being separate (not described). The pipe(50), Fig.2 (not shown) communicates the induction manifold downstream of the carburettor throttle to move diaphragm 47 against spring 51 thereby opening valve 39 to start recirculation.
