Abstract
1343930 Coating FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 25 May 1971 [6 July 1970] 16823/71 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B3 F2 and F4] A high temperature seal 18, 20, 22, 26 for a ceramic regenerator 24 of a gas turbine engine has a coating formed from particles 30 of lubricating material surrounded by a metal shell 32 which oxidises and erodes at the operating temperature to expose the particles 30. The particles 30 may be of calcium fluoride, barium fluoride, lithium fluoride, sodium fluoride, molybdenum disulphide, tungsten, selenide, and the shell 32 may be of nickel, copper or cobalt. The coating may comprise two or three layers of particles and can be formed by plasma spraying the metal coated particles 30 onto a stainless steel substrate. Alternatively, the coating is formed by fabricating the particles into a sheet and riveting the sheet to a substrate.
