Abstract

1343496 Direct positive photographic emulsions EASTMAN KODAK CO 14 May 1971 [18 May 1970] 14936/71 Heading G2C [Also in Division C3] A direct-positive emulsion comprises silver halide grains fogged with a reducing agent e.g. stannous chloride, hydrazine, thiourea dioxide and tetra (hydroxy-methyl) phosphonium chloride, and a metal more electropositive than silver e.g. Au, Rh, Pt, Pd and Ir, and having adsorbed to the grains, as an electron acceptor, a cyanine dye comprising two nuclei selected from nitrobenzothiazole and nitronaphtho-thiazole joined via their respective 2-carbon atoms by a monomethina linkage. Examples of the dyes given are 3 1 3<SP>1</SP> - diethyl - 6 1 6<SP>1</SP> - dinitrothiacyanine chloride and an hydro - 6 1 6<SP>1</SP> - dinitro - 3 1 3<SP>1</SP> - di (3-sulphopropyl) thiacyanine hydroxide, sodium salt. The emulsion may also comprise an alkali permeable synthetic polymer derived from the following monomers (a) an alkyl acrylate (b) acrylic acid or an acrylate sulphoester and (c) an acrylic monomer having an active methylene group in a side chain. Specified polymers include copoly (ethyl acrylate - acrylic acid - 2- acetoacetoxy ethyl methacrylate), copoly (butyl - or methyl-acrylate - sodium acryloyloxy propane sulphonate - 2 (acetoacetoxy) ethyl methacrylate and copoly (butyl acrylate - acrylic acid - 2- cyanoacetoxyethyl methacrylate).
