Abstract

1,217,534. Silver salt diffusion transfer process. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Jan. 25, 1968 [Jan.25, 1967], No.4012/68. Heading G2C. The invention relates to a silver salt diffusion transfer process in which the silver halide emulsion layer contains as the binder (a) a water insoluble polymer or a copolymer of an acrylate or an alphasubstituted acrylate; the alcohol residue of the ester or the alpha-substitutent containing an active methylene group and the amount of acrylate in the copolymer being at least 50% or (b) a copolymer containing 3-20% by weight of a sulphoester of formula CH 2 = C-CO.O R 3 SO 2 OM wherein R 4 R 4 is H or alkyl R 3 is alkylene, cycloakylene or alkylene interrupted by at least one O or S atom and M is a cation and the remainder being an alkyl acrylate or an alkyl alpha-substituted acrylate, the alkyl group containing 1-10 carbon atoms. The silver halide emulsion may be overcoated with a layer containing the acrylate polymer or copolymer. Preferably the acrylate used is of the formula: CH 2 = C-CO OR 2 wherein R 1 is H or alkyl or R 1 R-O-CO-CH 2 X wherein R is alkylene and X is aliphatic acyl or cyano and R 2 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or R-O-CO-CH 2 -X, the alkyl or alkylene groups having from 1-10 cations. Alternatively the acrylate copolymers listed in Specification 1,181, 508 may be used. The acrylate polymer is preferably mixed with gelatine. Acrylate interpolymers containing (i) at least 50% by weight of a monomer of formula CH 2 = C-CO-OR o " where | R<SP>1</SP> 0 R<SP>1</SP> 0 is hydrogen or methyl and Ro is alkyl, (ii) either (a) 3 to 20% by weight of a sulphoester monomer of formula set out above or (b) from 3 to 20% by weight of acrylic acid and (iii) an acrylate of formula CH 2 = C - COÀOR 2 | R 1 wherein the values of R 1 and R 2 are as above. In the examples, the gelatine silver halide emulsion layer either contains, or is overcoated with, methyl acrylate/sulphopropyl acrylate/2- acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate interpolymer, butyl acrylate/ sulphopropyl acrylate copolymer or butyl acrylate/ sulphopropyl acrylate/2- acetoacetoxyethyl methaerylate, imagewise exposed, developed and pressed against a receptor sheet containing palladium nuclei in an alkyl acrylate/ acrylic acid latex.
