Abstract

1413125 Copolymers for silver halide emulsion preparation EASTMAN KODAK CO 21 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 59024/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] A silver halide emulsion contains as peptizer a co- or ter-polymer containing the following monomers:- (A) a vinyl imidazolium monomer, a vinyl pyridinium monomer (either of which may be substituted by alkyl or aryl groups) or a monomer of formula wherein Z is O or NH, X is an anion, R 1 is H or methyl, R 2 is alkylene with 1-6 C atoms and R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are alkyl with 1-8 C atoms, or R 3 and R 4 together complete a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring or R 3 , R 4 and R 5 together complete a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring and the N atom bonded to R 2 has a double bond attached thereto and (B) at least one ethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one carboxylic group; the molar ratio of quaternary ammonium groups to carboxylic groups in the polymer being 1À1 to 15. Specified terpolymers are acrylic acid/methacrylic acid/2- (methacryloyloxy) - ethyltrimethylammonium methyl sulphate or tosylate or 1,2-dimethyl-5- vinylpyridinium methyl sulphate or tosylate or 3-methyl-1-vinylimidazolium methyl sulphate and the specified copolymer is acrylic acid/2- (methacryloyloxy) ethyltrimethylammonium methyl sulphate. The co- and ter-polymers are used to produce ammonical and neutral emulsions and may be admixed with gelatin. The co- and ter-polymers are prepared by mixing in water the quaternary ammonium salt with acrylic acid and optionally methacrylic acid, potassium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite and heating. Specified quaternary salts are 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethyl ammonium methosulphate, or tosylate; 1,2 - dimethyl - 5 - vinyl - pyridinium methosulphate or tosylate and 3-methyl-1-vinylimidazolium methosulphate.
