Abstract

1474750 Vinylbenzyl ammonium polymers EASTMAN KODAK CO 26 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 41938/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Homopolymers containing repeating units of formula where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are H or C 1-6 alkyl, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are C 1-20 alkyl and X<SP>(-)</SP> is an anion, the total number of carbon atoms is R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> being sufficient to render the polymer water-insoluble, and copolymers containing at least one-third of such repeating units and repeating units of a hydrophobic comonomer, the total number of carbon atoms in R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> and/or the proportion of hydrophobic comonomer units being sufficient to render the copolymer waterinsoluble, may be prepared by reacting a vinylbenzyl halide polymer or copolymer with a tertiary amine and optionally subjecting to anion exchange with a silver salt, e.g. silver acetate or p-toluenesulphonate. The polymers are useful as dye mordants in photographic systems. The reaction may be effected in an alcohol, and the product may contain vinylbenzyl ether units derived therefrom. Alternatively the polymer may be incompletely quaternized and cross-linked by reacting with a polyamine, e.g. gelatine, butanediamine, imidazole or pyrazine. Examples describe mordants obtained by reacting styrene/vinylbenzyl chloride copolymers with (1, 6 and 11) tri-n-pentylamine, (5) tri-n-butylamine, (7 and 12) tri-nhexylamine, (8) tri-n-heptylamine, (9 and 13) tri-n-octylamine, (10) dimethyldodecylamine, (14) diethyldodecylamine, (15) dimethyltetradecylamine and (19) dimethyloctadecylamine; methyl methacrylate/vinylbenzyl chloride copolymers with (2) tri-n-hexylamine, (3) tri-nbutylamine and (4) triisopentylamine; and polyvinylbenzyl chloride with (21) tri-n-hexylamine.
