Abstract
1343085 Reinforced pyrolytic graphite; silicon carbide SUSQUEHANNA CORP 15 July 1971 [21 Aug 1970] 33172/71 Heading C1A A material comprises pyrolytic graphite and silicon carbon and is characterized by the fact that the silicon carbide is co-deposited with the pyrolytic graphite such that the SiC consists of needle crystals, oriented along the "C" axis of the co-deposited graphite, the SiC comprising at least 5% by volume of the material. The material may be obtained by pyrolysing a mixture of methyl trichlorosilane and a hydrocarbon gas on a substrate heated to 2800‹ F to 4000‹ F. The gaseous mixture may contain a gaseous inert diluent, e.g. H 2 , A, He, N 2 or mixtures thereof, the hydrocarbon used is preferably methane and the pyrolysis may be performed at atmospheric pressure. In the preferred embodiment a fibre reinforced matrix, is obtained in which the reinforcement is at least one layer of refractory, e.g. C, filaments or strands which strands in each layer are substantially parallel and laterally spaced, and the matrix is the pyrolytic graphite SiC material defined previously which is preferably deposited around the reinforcing filaments whilst they are being laid up on a mandrel or shaped forme.
