1342764 Angular bending FOSTER WHEELER CORP 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 9885/71 Heading B3E Apparatus for bending a tube comprises a die assembly 62 having a central opening 74 for receiving said tube, two bending surfaces 72, 76, and bearings 144, 146 on opposite sides of said tube, and means to rotate said die assembly about either of bearings in either direction. The apparatus has a U-shaped frame 12 supporting two parallel hydraulic cylinders 24, 26 which rotate a plurality of sprockets 30 by means of racks (not shown) via a clutch 34 on a shaft 32 on which the sprockets are mounted. An hydraulic cylinder 42 is actuated to lock the clutch discs 36, 38 together by means of a key 40. A chain 44 connects the sprockets 30 to a second series of sprockets 46 on a shaft 48 carrying a support block 52 in which slides a slide block 60 which forms the base of the bending die assembly 62. The assembly comprises upper and lower die blocks 64, 66 (Fig. 3) forming a central ribbed aperture 74 for clamping the tube and having a pair of aligned apertures 90, 94 for receiving columns 134, 136 supporting an hydraulic cylinder 130 for raising and lowering the upper die 64. The columns are secured to the slide block 60 and the die assembly is raised and lowered by an hydraulic cylinder 140. To form a bend with smooth sidewalls a pressure wiper die 100 (Fig. 6) is provided, the die halves 102, 108 being hydraulically actuated and having curved nose portions 126, 128 (Fig. 5, not shown). In operation a tube is clamped in the wiper die 100. The upper and lower die blocks 64, 66 are moved together and the bending tube assembly is adjustable by moving the shaft 48 laterally with respects to the bending die assembly, by an hydraulic cylinder 148 (Fig. 2, not shown), so that the assembly 62 may be rotated by the shaft 48 about either of the bearings 144, 146.
