Abstract
1342366 Wire coating apparatus BEKAERT SA NV 31 Aug 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 42022/70 Heading D1L [Also in Division B2] Apparatus for coating wire with a thermosetting resin composition comprises a bath 1, a fixed tube 4 with holes in the bottom, rotatable tube 5 and a seal 2. When used to coat wire the coating liquid level is above the level of the bottom of tube 5 and a preheated wire is fed upwardly through the seal 2 and through the tubes 4, 5 to be coated in the vortex created by the motor driven rotating tube 5. The coating medium enters through the holes in the base of tube 4 and passes outwardly between the ends of tube 4 and 5. As an alternative to the tube shown gaps may be provided by standing the tube 4 in the bath on legs or alternatively the tube 4 may be raised to provide a longer dipping time. The rotatable tube may have a propellor near the lower end thereof. The wire may be preheated before entering the bath by electrical induction. To increase the pot life of the thermosetting composition a cooling coil may be provided in the bath. In a typical example the wire is fed through the bath at a rate of 78 meters/ min., the tube 5 is rotated at 3000 rpm, the bath is maintained at a temperature of 25‹C the wire is preheated to 160‹C and the viscosity of the bath contents is 4800 c.p. This produces a smooth coating on the wire of 0.1 mm. The thermosetting resin composition comprises 35-52% of a reactive monomer having a polymerisable double bond, 32-50% of an unsaturated polyester, 1-3% of an organic peroxide and 6-22% of a less unsaturated polymer such as polyester or rubber.
