Abstract
1415778 Aromatic polysulphones; polytetrafluoroethylene compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 April 1974 [16 April 1973 19 Nov 1973] 18184/73 and 53582/73 Headings C3R and C3P The molecular weights of aromatic polysulphones are increased by heating in oxygen at 330‹ C. to 450‹ C. The polysulphones initially have reduced viscosities of at least 0À3 (measured at 25‹ C. as 1% solutions in dimethyl formamide) and contain at least 0À2 aromatically bound hydroxyl groups per 100 polymer repeat units. From 10 to 90% by weight of polysulphone starting material may be mixed with 90 to 10% by weight of fluorocarbon polymer (e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene). The polysulphone, alone or mixed with the fluorocarbon polymer, may be coated on an article and then heated in oxygen to increase the molecular weight. In examples polysulphones consisting of the repeating units are coated as a dry powder and as aqueous dispersions also containing polytetrafluoroethylene powders, on aluminium plates and heated to increase the molecular weights.
