1342201 Road vehicle bodies S L SCHLANGER 28 Jan 1972 4187/72 Heading B7B A safety vehicle comprises a passenger compartment 100 which is movable with respect to the vehicle body, a cushion, net, or inflatable bag 17, disposed on the roof of compartment 100 above each passenger seat, and a cable 30a which moves the cushion, &c., into a position in front of-the passengers as the compartment moves of the passengers as the compartment moves forwardly and upwardly as a result of a co - llision. The rear edges of cushions 17, 18 are pivoted on axles 40, 41, the cushion 17 being connected to a pair of parallel cables 30a, 30b guided around pulleys 31. The compartment 100 has wheels 191 and 123 on each side for engaement with rails 192, such that on impact the compartment moves to the Fig. 4 (not shown) position. Racks 26 slidably disposed in channels 53 guide the compartment 100 forwardly. Front bumber 11, Fig. 7, has portions 11a, 11b urged forwardly by springs 60. Upon frontal impact plates 63 push a plate 64 rearwardly to cause a rod 36 to retract a lever 37 and so release a plate 85, Fig. 10. Steering wheel 14, Fig. 1, is connected through a shaft 97 to a collar 88 engaged by a square shaft 89. Upon impact, rod 36 moves in the direction of arrow 400, causing arm 37 to pivot to move plate 85 in the direction of arrow 300 to compress a spring 38, thus disconnecting collar 88 from shaft 97. A latch 147 also becomes disengaged from a socket 149 on a bulkhead 301.
