Abstract
1,245,452. Vehicle safety harness. D. BUTLER. 5 Jan., 1970 [4 Oct., 1968], No. 47151/ 68. Heading A3V. [Also in Division B7] An inertia operated passenger restraining safety device for a vehicle comprises a rigid arm A mounted to extend diagonally across the driver's or front passenger's seat and to pivot with a transverse spindle a, which may be divided, if, as in a preferred embodiment two arms are provided, to rotate in two separate square-ended parts within a support B secured to the vehicle floor between said two seats such that toothed discs B<SP>2</SP> fixed to the spindle, which are normally separated by springs b<SP>3</SP> from toothed discs B<SP>1</SP> rigidly mounted to the vehicle, interlock respectively, under the action of the inertia of a ball D<SP>1</SP>, with the latter discs under sudden vehicle deceleration. The two parts of the spindle, operalble independently, are connected by a pin a<SP>1</SP>, and pins a<SP>2</SP> connect the arms A to the spindle, frames b, b<SP>1</SP> of the unit being secured to the vehicle by bolts b<SP>2</SP>. Under sudden braking the ball D<SP>1</SP> rolls forward and up the inclined side of a cup d<SP>2</SP>, raising plate d<SP>4</SP> and causing a rod D to rise up slots b<SP>5</SP> in the unit casing. Members d are thus forced. into contact with discs B<SP>2</SP> which engage and lock with discs B<SP>1</SP> against the action of springs b<SP>3</SP>. The rigid arms A are normally pivotable against the action of springs d<SP>5</SP> and are formed from padded metal bars. A lever d<SP>3</SP>, at right angles to rod D, constitutes a manual release mechanism.
