Abstract
1341594 Transparent block copolymers CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 26 May 1971 [29 May 1970] 17160/71 Heading C3P Two-block copolymers having good transparency and impact-resistance are obtained by a one-step polymerization of a mixture of an alkenylaromatic hydrocarbon and a conjugated diene, the monomers being present in a ratio between 78 : 22 and 90 : 10 by weight. The polymerization is carried out in a hydrocarbon solvent in the absence of polar impurities using as catalyst 0À1 to 0À8 millimoles of an organomonolithium initiator per mole of monomers. The ratio of the monomers incorporated in the polymer is 80 : 20 to 88 : 12 by weight. The solvent should contain not more than 10 ppm of water, and traces of polar impurities are preferably removed by addition of a small amount of n-butyl lithium, the excess being removed by back-titration with methanol after addition of a little styrene to act as an indicator. Copolymerization of styrene and butadiene catalysed by n-butyl lithium is described.
