Abstract

1341571 Reservoir pens GILLETTE CO 5 July 1971 [9 July 1970] 31498/71 Heading B6P [Also in Division B5] A writing tip 10 for a pen having an ink reservoir filler of porous absorbent material is composed of a homogeneous mass of thermoplastics material, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, polymethylmethacrylate, polyoxymethylene, nylon, polyethyleneterephthalate, polypropylene and copolymers thereof, the writing tip having an axial, open-ended ink-conveying channel 14 and a plurality of longitudinally extending parallel multi-lobed ink-conveying channels 15, 16 circumaxially spaced in circular array around the axial channel. The tip is manufactured by melting and extruding the polymer through a die having a discharge orifice whose maximum diameter is 7 to 15 times the diameter of the writing tip and which includes a plurality of mandrels in circumaxial spaced relation to an axially positioned mandrel, gently drawing the extrusion while cooling to a plastic stage in a quenching bath to reduce the diameter of the extrusion to between 25 and 50% of the extrusion orifice size, cooling the drawn extrusion to below the plastic temperature stage in a quenching bath and subjecting the extrusion to further drawing under tension at a temperature below the melting point of the polymer to further reduce the transverse dimension of the extrusion to that desired in the final writing element.
